Definitions regarding Pathetic News
Stories
From
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
News is essentially new information or current events.
This article discusses news in the context of
journalism.
News is reported by newspapers, television and radio
programs, Web sites, RSS feeds and wire services. News
reporting is a type of journalism, typically written or
broadcast in news style. Most news is investigated and
presented by journalists (or reporters) and often
distributed via news agencies. If the content of news is
significant enough, it eventually becomes history.
“Storytelling is humanity’s oldest form of literacy.”
The words of Kate Mitchoff (2005) suggest that each
human is born with the ability to use verbal
communication to teach, explain, and entertain. The oral
description of events, either real or imagined, is known
as the practice of storytelling. Some stories that have
been told from parent to child, one generation at a
time, have been repeated, adapted and improved from a
time when there was no television, no radio, no
newspaper, indeed, no paper. Some of the most tragic of
these stories carry the most important of messages that
teach the most important lessons of life. The messages
sustain ideas, and ideals. They help us all better
understand the human experience. Stories may be found in
the home relationship between parent and child. Stories
are found in classrooms attended by children and adults.
They are seen in the intimacy of family, the complexity
of business, and the widespread public experience of
leadership and followership. The vast modern
entertainment industry is built upon a foundation of
sophisticated multimedia storytelling. The following
text describes some of the known history and theory of
storytelling.
Reference.com on PATHETIC
pa·theti·cal·ly adv.
Synonyms: pathetic, pitiful, pitiable, piteous,
lamentable.
These adjectives describe what inspires or deserves
pity. Something pathetic elicits sympathetic sadness and
compassion: “a most earnest... entreaty, addressed to
you in the most pathetic tones of the voice so dear to
you” (Charles Dickens). Both pitiful and pitiable apply
to what is touchingly sad: “She told a most pitiful
story” (Samuel Butler). “The emperor had been in a state
of pitiable vacillation” (William Hickling Prescott).
Sometimes these three terms connote contemptuous pity,
as for what is hopelessly inept or inadequate: a school
with pathetic academic standards. “To be guided by
second-hand conjecture is pitiful” (Jane Austen). “That
cold accretion called the world, which, so terrible in
the mass, is so unformidable, even pitiable, in its
units” (Thomas Hardy). Piteous applies to what cries out
for pity: “They... made piteous lamentation to us to
save them” (Daniel Defoe). Lamentable suggests the
evocation of pity mixed with sorrow: “Tell thou the
lamentable tale of me,/And send the hearers weeping to
their beds” (Shakespeare).
